Great job Robin! I'd love to see captions on the photos, because without my reading glasses (yikes!) I don't recognize everyone. How can we add photos?
I'm sure I have some old ones that would make us smile.

You need to create your own login and then you can add pictures. I have a ton on pictures so I'll add them over time.

I went to Toro Hill from 1960-1965. I did not live on the property, I lived in Mountain Lodge Park and took the bus with Sol every day. I remember Walter the head counselor and Rae Berman the director.
I have lived in South Florida for 30 years, but I remember the "old days" with fond memories. I would love to hear from old co-campers.

Wow - I went to Toro Hill for 17 summers. From papoose to counselor. The best place ever. So many great friends. I'm really looking for Carol Silver - Walt's daughter. I really miss her and want to know how she is doing. And anyone else: lisa strauss, lisa schwartzman, ronnie blinderman, paul davidson.....

That was my sister, Debbi Gilbert. I'm Michael Gilbert, and I was full time at Toro Hill from 1945- 1960 when I started working in the Catskills. My folks, sister, and brother Gary, continued on there. My gang included Alan Kroll, Richie Ravner, Howie Greenspan, and a couple other guys. It was a grand place to sdpend summers.

Unknown said...

I was a camper at Toro Hill from 1953 when I was a papoose to the late 60's when I was the head life guard; skipping some years for sleep away camp or other places. It was a great place with terrific people and great memories. I live in Greeley Colorado with my wife Lanell, my dog Allison and three cats. My old camp buddy; Ed Haimovitz lives about 45 minutes west of me in Glen Haven Colorado. whats great about this site is that you can ask the age old question; what have you been doing for the past forty years?

My family and I went to Toro Hill from 1948- to 1970. Went from camaper to boatboy(when there was a functional lake) to counselor. Probably had some of you in my group when I was a counselor. They certainly were great summers. Drove pastToro Hillthis past summer-place is overgrown and place looks abandoned.Sorry to see it end that way.

Remember Toro Hill before there was a pool...remember that very weird muddy like substance in the lake. Row boating, going bowling, dairy queen, the casino - movie night, bingo, color war, teather ball, very intense dodge ball and seriously dangerous volley ball - especially when you are at the net!

Michael Gilbert, AKA Miqqi Alica Gilbert said...

hello to both Alans. Alan Reiffe is out there somewhere as well. Please tell Eddie Haimowitz to email me: Gilbert@YorkU.ca.

I remember the lake when it was clean and fun. Remember the test you had to take to get out of the "crib?" And don't forget the waterfall.

PS: I can't figure out how to post pictures.

where and whne is this reunion?

Anonymous said...

Maxine Silver was my counselor and Walter was my science teacher in Jr High. I recall accidently addressing Walter in class as 'Uncle Walter'instead of Mr. Silver. How embarrassing for a teenager.

For some reason I also remember the razz (remember them?) for Maxine the year she was my counselor.

I loved color war and sing! My daughter's camp doesn't do color war, what a shame.

Looking forward to seeing many of you in September.

does anybody remember, FRODO LIVES which was spray painted all over camp one year. Or that the ulimate male accomplishment in sports was to hit the softball into the weeds which also had thick brown flowers standing tall? Or for those who lived on the premises, how the bungalows in the chicken coop were separated by chicken wire. what a place, and how do you tell your kids of that real unique experience. Here's to the Sunday nite movie with Rae Berman screening who came in.

Questions for Thought & Answers

Why is it that Ziggy Jupiter never called I 42 in bingo?

Does anyone now Tiny's (sanit. worker) real name?

Who had the "pleasure" of John Luger jumping out from/behind a tree at night as you were walking alone?

Other than Duke Markel and Neil Katine- did anyone ever hit a softball into the left field weeds on a fly?

Who was the best pinball player in Toro Hill history? " " " " tetherball " " " "

Which counselor was the best storyteller?

Who holds the record for finishing the most Monster Thick Shakes at Dairy Aisle in a day, season, lifetime?

What was the highest rate of speed you ever drove, were a passenger in, etc. going around Dead Man's Curve?

How big were those turtles in the island area in the middle of the lake?

I can't wait to see everyone at the reunion.

Hi. I (Bob Kramer)was at Toro Hill from 1957 until 1961. My family lived in Mt. Lodge Park so we took the bus with Sol Bear, Burt Gotfried, and Donny (from Washingtonville). I would love to come to the reunion.

Anonymous said...

Please inform whoever Anonymous is that his Eddie Thornton questions are undoubtably the most esoteric trivia imaginable (I remember Caesar), and that "Frodo Lives" was done with Magic Marker, not spray paint. In response to Keith's question, Richie Ravner was far and away the best pinball player. His skill was refined the summer when he was supposed to be a life guard but spend it instead in a leg cast as a result of his breaking a metatarsal playing B ball.
Larry Fuchsman

the two original camp directors where named Chester and Bea. I don't recall their last name. Walter Silver took over sometime in the late fifties. In response to Larry Fuchsman; here are some none esoteric questions:
Before their was an olympics their was color war. What where the camps colors?
The first year we had a pool was 1960; name the three life guards?
In the first production of the musical "South Pacific" (there was a second one in the sixties) who played the lead female role of Nellie Forbush?

I was at Toro Hill from laate 50's to mid-60's. Lived on the "Hill" across from Plum Lane. My cousins, Maddy & Jeff Kahn, were also there at that time. Friends of ours: Linda & Ian Bress: Donna, Maddy & Robert Berman; Susan Eisenstein; Susan, Alan, Robert Smith. (Jeff and Susan Smith married in the 80's).

Jill Howell was in my group but I have no idea where she is now.

Will check at my Mom's house for any Toro pix - I think we have a few of them around. Will be more than happy to have you post them.

What's being done with the Toro land? Was there in the late 70's after Toro closed and was sad to see how bad things looked. I guess nothing lasts forever. Monroe is now a suburb of NYC.I used to think it was so far in the "country" from Brooklyn.

It's good to be in touch with Toro folks. Take care...

Answering a few of my own questions that I put out there a couple of months ago.

1. Brian Blinderman was by far the best pinball player at Toro Hill. He had soft hands, he never tilted the machine and got great action moving it. If you were waiting to play after him, you were better off coming back later.

2. Bruce Parker was the best storyteller- No one else was even close. Does anyone from my group remember the hanging judge story he told?

I'm so glad that I was able to reach Randy Skolnick, Jill Howell and that Vivian Geyer has found out about the reunion. I hope all three of you are coming to the party. How great will it be seeing Woody, Jeff S., Scott K., Debbie K., etc. together again.

Vivian, I hope all is well with you and your family. My e-mail is kdavidson@davidsoncohen.net.

It was great reading the blog from Marty Burinescu. I've thought of you thousands of times over the years. You were the one who taught me how to swim. I'd love to see you at the reunion. I hope you can make it there.

Keith & ALL, This is Richie Ravner. It would have been unbelievable to be there in NY but alas not to be. Keith, first of all, Blinderman could not hold a candle to me at pin ball, but he was in his prime many year later, so maybe we just forget!! What ever happened to your brother Paul?? I truly loved your family and would often speak to & see your mom when Paul was in the rehab facility in midtown. Fuie, a wedgie to you and all your group...it was great hearing from you as always. It's amazing that I was either a counselor or lifeguard when most of you were campers and from the pictures I have seen, I still have more hair on my head than most too. Robbie Smith, if you read this, you were an all time favorite and I still have the hots for your mom June, your dad Walter was wonderful also. More later.

Does anyone want to join the Toro Hill page on Facebook - you can make the pictures bigger there. Right now there are only two members on it.

Brian Blinderman said...

I was looking for a way for everyone to share their pictures on a web site. There are many web sites that do this, but Facebook may be the way to go. We can always ask our kids how to use the site. Lets kick the idea around awhile and come up with a plan. I'm sure we all want to see the pictures. By the way, it was great seeing all of you. Mike, thanks for the use of your home.

Anonymous said...

Hi Brian! Facebook is very easy to use, easier than this blog actually. You just sign on and you have a facebook page. You can use the search engine to find Toro Hill and voila. It's really easy.

Anonymous said...

How great was that? Just seeing and speaking to everyone after all these years is as good as it gets. The wonderful memories of Toro Hill and being able to share them with the people who were part of those memories was absolutely priceless. Anyone who came to the reunion and does not feel the same way must not have true Toro Hill blood in them.
To Robin, Stu and Michael, thank you so much for putting the reunion together and for all of the time and effort you put in to make this happen.
Wishing everyone a happy and
healthy new year.

I am so thrilled that i kept this date open. In those short 2 month periods whatever took place over the years turned out to be a magical experience that all of us kept close to our hearts. The memories stay with me always and the proof was evident the day after the reunion, in that amazing feeling of renewed enthusiasm and gratitude that I feel for what Schnitzer's Toro Hill added to my life. Hope to keep the tradition of annual reunions alive.

I'm wondering - did you talk about making laniards, orange drinks from little cartons at snake time, no t.v., no video games, walking barefoot, the great weeping willow trees, movie night, socials, ice cream cones, having all the time in the world to be a kid, did anyone ever change their mattress? but didn't we all sleep great. the "head shop" in town, thunder storms, great musicals (darn I was always in the chorus), best friends, boating - there is no place like it anymore and it was amazing.

Props to all who put this party together. It was a blast....had the time of my life.Amazing to still be around and celebrate the past and what a past it was...those times, that era. It's a shame that the kids today do not know what a bungalow is.All they can do is watch Dirty Dancing and wonder what the Catskills were like.
Thanks again to all.I will be in touch...Artie G...

Since nobody has furnished any answers I will. The camp colors were green and gray. The last colorwar before we started the Olympics was the Gray Cowboys against the Green Indians.
The three life guards were; Martin Altchuler, head life guard, Ted Ranzell and Larry Herman. Ted married Elanor Parker of Mountain Lodge Park. Larry had the hots for Marilyn Shnitzer but it didn't work out so he joined the Marine Corps.
the first Nellie Forbush was Roz Cohen who my parents used to rave about. Curiosly it was were older brother Moss Cohen who went on to having a well known career as a dancer with the Martha Graham Troupe.

Robin Cohen said...

Debbie G- yes we did talk about lots of memories- the roundhouse, the shows at the casino, Skippy the cop, roller skating at the Avalon, Stuarts Root Beer stop, color war and on and on.

Hello All. I wonder if anyone out there remembers me or my sister- Billy Pincus or Wendy. We were campers from 1970 to 1974. The only person that I ran into (some years back) was Woody at a Tennis Pro shop in Grand Central Station. He was in a band at that time called "Aint so tough"?
Although I was pretty young when I was there, I have some very vivid memories of catching frogs and turtles at the lake; I even remember some large goldfish at the bottom of the waterfall.
The only camp counselor that I recall was "sky" and I remember having a crush on "an older woman" named Donna? who wore a Patchoulie scent that I can still smell. When I started at Toro Hill, pinball was still a dime, but with inflation it rose to 2 plays for a quarter. I also remember Marvin Rosen and Sol
B. So many fond times that I have often wished there was a place like that today to spend the summer with my wife and kids.

I went to Camp Toro Hill during the Summer of 1974.

If I am not mistaken, that year, the camp was renamed "Camp ToPal" because Camp Toro Hill was merged with the day camp from nearby Palomar Park.

My memories are a bit fuzzy, as I was only 10 years old at the time, but I do remember that one of my counselors was named "Dane".

Tanner,
I am so happy that your Aunt Rae is aware of the upcoming reunion. I'm sure she is thrilled to know that many friendships have remained intact and flourished over the years. I remember your Aunt Rae calling my house in Mt. Lodge Park when I was about 7 to tell my parents they needed to bring me to the award ceremony since I was winning All Around Camper. We ran out of the house so fast I didn't have time to change out of my one shoulder bathing suit. I still have it today (although it doesn't fit like it used to!!). There are lots and lots of memories and I can't wait for the reunion on October 3rd. Wish your Aunt well. Maybe you can show her the pictures on Facebook the next time you see her!!

I, my parents, sister and her husband, as well as their friends, spent a few summers at Toro Hill. While I remember practically nothing about it, I know I missed Woodstock because I had to work as a counselor.
